KEBAP!

Why they don’t have this in the US, I’ll never know. It’s very common fast food in Europe. They are called each Doner Kebab (they have other kebabs, that I’ve never tried) or Doner KebaP, or Pita House, or whatever.

It’s not little cubes of meat strung on a stick--it’s a HUGE thing of meat on a spit, that roasts all day in the background. They shave off meat with a little sander looking machine, and throw it on a pita or roll with carrots, chili sauce, ranch like sauce, lettuce, tomatoes--the works. They cost about $4, and are so yummy, but always give me stomach aches, since I don’t really eat beef anymore.

  1. Yeah, that's a gyro, and it's Greek. Sounds like the Italians have co-opted the idea. You've not had one at U of I? There are two great places near UW for gyros.

  2. Hahaha, sorry Uncle Steve, I probably wasn't clear. They are totally similar to gyros, but they aren't lamb, and its not tziaki sauce (which I am addicted to) but some other yogurt based sauce. The meat is also shaved really thin, like sandwich meat, and they throw lettuce and other nonsense on there.

They are totally inferior to gyros though.

Our gyro place on campus just burned down :(

  3. here in ecuador, we have shwarma, which is a similar middle eastern thing! it's so so good, i sometimes get a sandwich for $2.50 by the university, it comes with a yogurt based sauce and a spicy red sauce, so it's not a good idea to eat it on the bus (i have done this and sauce got all over me)
    love,
